Aurora RFC started in 1998 in Division III of the TRU. In a Cinderella season,
the women finished in first place in the standings and took the championship against
the York Yeowomen 2. Aurora moved up to Division II in 1999. The team finished
with a 7 and 3 record, and again faced the York Yeomen 2 in the championship.
Aurora defeated York again, but in triple overtime.
The team moved to Premier Division 1, the top division in the TRU, in 2000.
For Aurora it was a building year as we adjusted to the higher calibre of play.
Our competition included two teams who came down from the ORU level, so the learning
curve was steep.
In 2001, Aurora RFC were champions for the third time in four years. Unbelievably,
we had to defeat our old nemesis, York Yeomen 2, in yes, overtime. This victory
earned us promotion to the Ontario Women's League.
2002 was a year of big changes. Aurora RFC merged with the Toronto Barbarians
just before the season began. Overnight we moved from a single level club to one
with two senior teams, one in the OWL and one in TRU 1. The Aurora Barbs also
added an U19 girls' team this season, which went undefeated.
Due to the lateness of the merge, the schedule could not be re-drawn, and the
teams often had to play in different cities on any given Saturday. Despite this
distraction, the Aurora Barbs consistently fielded two strong teams, and took
the OWL cup (by defeating the Oakville Crusaders).
For 2008, the Aurora Barbs two senior teams will both play
in the OWL, team on team against the other clubs.
