Uni: Battaglia and the Bears November 1, 2011
October 30, 2011 - MORAGA, Calif. - The Golden Bears dropped a 26-17 decision to Saint Mary's before defeating Santa Clara and University of San Diego at the California 7s Sunday on Pat Vincent Field.
"Saint Mary's did a really good job with the organization of the event," said head coach Jack Clark. "Because there are not too many rugby tournaments anymore, we tend to forget how much fun they are. This will be one of the positives to a full fall sevens season."
California was captained on Sunday by freshman Andrew Battaglia, who played well in four starts during the tournament. The Bears also got strong play from fellow freshman Eakalafi Okusi as well as sophomores Jake Anderson, Paul Bosco, Hunter Frisinger and Max Shaulis as Cal exited the weekend with 28 tries scored, more than any other team in the competition.
In the Bears' three losses at the California 7s, Cal matched San Diego State and Cal Poly with two and three tries in those respective contests, and notched three tries against four scored by the Gaels. By losing those matches by two, six and nine points, Cal proved each of its missed conversions to be costly.

Junior Men: U18s Earn Split against Mississauga July 25, 2011
The ABRFC u18 squad needed a last minute try in the second team game to earn a split in TRU u18 action last night at Fletcher?s. It capped a real back and for struggle between the two teams that was not decided until the final seconds.
In the first team match-up the Blues proved to be too powerful for our u18s and cruised to a 31-0 victory. That win kept the Blues in first place in the TRU West Division standings.
In the evening?s first game, ABRFC took an early lead when fly-half William Tope slotted a 30 metre penalty to give the home side a 3 ? 0 lead. A few minutes later he missed a second chance and as the Blues began to assert their physical presence it looked as if that miss would be important.
The Blues played a wide open style of play swinging the ball from sideline to sideline and put on a great deal of pressure. That resulted in two tries for the visitors but fortunately both converts were missed. That would come back to harm them in the end.
With the score 10-3 and time running out several line-up changes brought new life to Aurora. First, fly-half Ryan Cowan scored after running through several tackles to bring new life to the game. The convert was missed and Aurora trailed by 2.
Aurora kept up the pressure and just when it looked like time had run out, winger Rob Mackay pounced on a loose ball and broke several tackles on his way to scoring the winning points as time expired.
The ABRFC second u18 side finished the season with a record of 3 and 3, while the ABRFC first team finish their season Sunday against the Toronto Nomads. Kick-off is scheduled for 6:30 at Fletcher?s.
