Sandy Townsend

Sandy is known as one of the most qualified rugby coaches in the independent school system. Recent coaching honours include Senior Boys’ Rugby championships in 2003 and 2007 and a CISAA gold win in Curling in 2009. Mr. Townsend coached the McGill University Rugby team and the Quebec team at the 1992 Canadian Junior championships in Calgary as well as the 1997 Canada Summer Games in Brandon. His experience extends to Head Coach of the Toronto Rugby Union U18 Team, Head Coach of the Ontario Rugby Union U21 team, and for the past decade has coached the Aurora Barbarians RFC u18 team.

George started playing rugby at Monarch Park S.S. in the late sixties and shortly moved up to club rugby with the Toronto Barbarians, playing up until 1977 when he moved west. He also played for Fort McMurray, Kaduna (Nigeria), and the Calgary Hornets. George made several appearances with Cambuslang RFC (Glasgow, Scotland). George started coaching, at the high school level in Calgary. He also coached the Hornets u-17s and u-19s. His coaching experience included coaching at the senior level in Fort McMurray, winning the Alberta 3rd divisional title in 1992. He was also a guest rugby instructor for high school phys. ed. classes in Fort McMurray. After a brief stint with Brock RFC, he returned last year to assist with the Barbarians U16's and is happy to be back in the fold.
