Aurora Barbarians – Under 16 Boys
Aurora Barbarians RFC (ABRFC) 29 - Brampton RFC 22

The Aurora Barbarians U16s travelled to Brampton to play an exhibition match on Tuesday evening. While terrific storms hit just south of Brampton, the rains held off long enough for the teams to get their game in. Both Brampton and Aurora have had teams forfeit to them and we both wanted to ramp up for the coming playoffs. To make it especially challenging, Aurora decided to spot Brampton four tries in the first 15 minutes to put themselves in a 22 – 0 hole. At that point, the boys woke up and began to play some excellent rugby. The set pieces, especially the scrums, reflected the coaching from the senior players earlier in the week. The first Barbs’ try came off an 8-man pickup by Matt Acchione from the 5-metre line. Fly-half, Chris Kearsey slotted the convert. Moments later, Inside centre, Eric Cain, took a sweet pass from Chris, cut back against the grain and turned on the jets to run 40 metres for the second try. The halftime score was 22 – 12. In the second half, the Barbs began demonstrating their creative running, highlighted by outside centre, Connor Libby’s run from 30 metres out. Brampton managed to get another try, but Aurora only got stronger. Scrum-half, Mike Griffiths, tapped on a quick penalty, broke a tackle and rambled in from the 40 metre mark for the fourth Barbs’ try, making the score 29 – 22 with 5 minutes to play. The Barbs had two almost certain tries end in knock-ons before the final whistle blew. Brampton was an excellent match-up for our boys who are starting to fire on all cylinders.

The final league game is Saturday, August 8 against Oshawa 2 at Fletcher’s Fields. Kick-off is 10:30.
