Aurora Barbarians – Under 16 Boys
Aurora Barbarians RFC (ABRFC) 19 - Wensleydale School 0
The Under 16 Aurora Barbs hosted their third U.K. touring side of the season, Wensleydale School, on Monday evening at Fletcher's. For the first time in years, Aurora defeated a team from across the pond. Granted, the Wensleydale team was decidedly smaller across the board, but a win is a win. Despite their smaller stature, Wensleydale moved the ball well and kept Aurora guessing with their excellent kicks under pressure. The English boys were also particularly adept at poaching balls from tackled Aurora players. However, once the Barbs began firing on all cylinders, the momentum was almost exclusively theirs. Late in the first half, defensive pressure forced Wensleydale to touch the ball down in their try zone. Off the resulting 5-metre scrum, 8-man Matt Acchione, picked up and punched through for the try. Fly-half, Chris Kearsey kicked the convert. In the second half, the tourists began to tire from constantly defending (and perhaps their game against Ontario the night before) and the Barbs mounted some excellent breakout attacks. The second try came from a lovely pass by Chris Kearsey to centre, Mitchell Harris. Later in the half, Kearsey again spun the ball smartly to centre, Eric Cain, who ran nearly 40 metres for the final try under the posts. Kearsey converted that one. The final score was 19-0. The Barbs hosted their guests, including a girls' field hockey team, in the clubhouse afterwards.
