Men’s Second Team - 1st Round Playoffs
The Aurora Barbarians Second team traveled to Brampton to play the first game of the playoff round robin. With a stiff breeze blowing to the downhill corner of the field, the game came down to who could use the wind to the best advantage. The answer was Aurora, who beat Brampton 18 – 13. Brampton had the wind in the first half and used it to try and keep the Barbs inside their own 22. Due to some amazing defensive plays, Aurora was able to keep Brampton from scoring any tries. Brampton kicked a penalty about 10 minutes into the game, but could not capitalize on their many opportunities after that. At the 30 minute mark, the Barbs put together several phases that led to a breakaway by 8-man, Paul Payne. Somehow he was able to chip the ball through the defense allowing the flanker, Rich Riley to touch the ball down. Brampton kicked a second penalty right at halftime to pull ahead 6 – 5. In the second half, the momentum shifted to the Barbs, who pounced for a converted try and two penalties. The try was scored by centre, Sam Soliman, who broke through a tackle to score under the posts. Brampton mounted a last-minute comeback, but had to settle for only one try. The playoffs resume on October 15 after the Thanksgiving break.
