The Aurora Barbarians under 18 boys’ team opened their season Wednesday night with a convincing 46-12 victory over the Toronto Scottish at Fletcher’s Fields. They scored two tries in the opening five minutes and never looked back. By halftime they had stretched their lead to 27-5.

The team was led onto the field by captain Jesse Hayman from Thornhill, and it was his aggressive play early on that set the tone for the victory. The team was lead in scoring by Matt Prevoe with three tries, newcomer Karl McCartney with two and singles from veteran John Buchner and rookies Paul Ross and Adam Hankins. Kicking converts were Hankins with two and James Hulburt with one.

Coach Sandy Townsend said after the game, “It is always nice to start the season with a win. Tonight we were led by some wonderful individual efforts, but next week will be tougher and we need to be ready. We have to put in a lot of work in the next few weeks to ensure we keep our shape and structure especially in defence.”

The team competes in the Central Division of the Toronto Rugby Union’s under 18 league and plays their home games at Fletcher’s Filed in northern Markham (19th sideroad and Woodbine) on Wednesday nights. Players come from as far afield as Barrie, Uxbridge, Maple and Pefferlaw to play on this Aurora based team.

In addition to their regular schedule of games the team will host two teams for England later this summer. They are to play Wallington Grammar School in mid July and Gravesend Grammar School in August.
