Midweek Action
July 29, 2010

Wednesday, Fletcher's was packed with competition. So much so that our U18 Boys game vs the Beach had to kick-off later than scheduled. That didn't rattle Coach Townsend nor Coach Dunn as both sides earned victories over their respective sides.

The U20 Men took on visiting Oshawa, but were unable to better their last meeting as they fell 54-12. A strong effort put in by the side on the warm Wednesday night, but unfortunately they did not have the speed on the night to keep pace with the opposition.

Weekend Results
July 29, 2010

This past weekend the Men and Women First IVs had more to contend with than just the weather. Their winning streaks were came to an abrupt end as surely as rain fell on Saturday.

The Women Firsts fell to the Markham Irish by a score of 12-36, while the Seconds suffered a similar loss 5-29.

The Men traveled to London, and while starting the day well with two hard fought wins by the IIIs and IIs, the Is lost in the final minutes of the game.

The Women's First IVs continue their winning ways with a convincing 33-0 win over the Toronto Saracens. Unfortunately the Seconds fell to their counterparts by a score of 25-5, but remain in second spot in their division, 1 pt ahead of the Irish, who they face next week.

The following from Nick Mitchell:
The Third Team, with a traditional mix of youth and experience played hard and I felt sad when they lost in the last minute. I also empathize for The Second Team who were also competitive against a strong Beach team, and kept it close until the late stages. Sadly, and for the first time ever, our Threes and Twos are in the bottom half of their respective divisions. I feel for our Seconds and Thirds whom have been denied stability and continuity because of the demands of the First Division. In a sense, it is sad that Clubs are judged by their first Teams, while less talented players work just as hard. In any case, both teams played with flair and commitment and I am certain that they will finish the season in the top halves of their divisions.

Meanwhile, our Firsts did not disappoint. We have a long history of Barb/Beach conflict. Who can forget The Cup Final in 1984? Now that was a heartbreaker and I believe it was the last time we saw Mac at that level. It would be another 23 years before we met them again in The Final and we won!

Today, our first team took complete control and at the half, even against the wind, had scored 5 tries to 1. Again, the team were a joy to watch and played open and entertaining rugby.

U16B: Send Off Reception A Success
July 17, 2010

U16 Tour Party with Mayor of Aurora, Phyllis Morris

Friday night, parents and supporters gathered at Aurora's Lions Club for a send off reception for the Barbs U16 Boys side touring Ireland in August. Great food, great music, and great bonds were formed.

We were honoured by the Mayor of Aurora, Phyllis Morris, who provided words of encouragement to our boys. She reminded them that while in Ireland they are to have fun, but also they are to be great ambassadors of both Aurora and of Canada.

Thanks to all who attended and who are supporting the Clubs first international tour!

U18B: U18s Boys Earn Split
July 16, 2010

The Aurora u18 team 1 traveled to Collingwood Wednesday night and turned in a strong performance in defeating the Georgian Bay Titans 24-12. It was a tight, physical game that wasn't decided until the final three minutes when prop Alex Conguista rumbled over from 10 metres out to put the game away.

The Aurora u18 team 2 were not able to get a win as they tumbled 50-5 to Oshawa 1 at Fletcher's.

In Collingwwod, Aurora jumped out to an early lead at the 10 minute mark when captain and flanker Jim McNight scooped up a loose ball and fed to centre Chris Martinez who scored under the posts. Leo Dubinski added the first of two conversions and Aurora was up 7-0. The Titans began to play some hard-nosed smash mouth rugby maintaining the ball for long periods of time but coming up empty when they neared the goal line. They were finally able to break through with less than five minutes left in the half to score but their conversion fell short and the half-time score was 7-5 for the visitors.

The heat and humidity necessitated a few line-up changes and the second half began with a re-jigged front row, back row and centre combination. The changes seemed to work as Eric Godwin took advantage of some good forward play to score after just 5 minutes. Dubinski was again successful with the conversion and Aurora was up 14-5.

They scored again at the 9 minute mark when fly-half Joe Tope darted through the smallest of gaps to run 50 meters to score in the right hand corner. The conversion was missed and Aurora led 19-5.

The Titans pushed back to narrow the gap to 19-12 and the game could have gone either way. A resilient Aurora defence bent but did not break and when Coguista scored with three minutes left the game was effectively over.

The next match for the Aurora 1 team is July 21st at home against Barrie while the Aurora 2 team is also host that evening, with their match against Ajax 2.
